WhyAfrica covers different angles
WhyAfrica will be at the 2025 Mining Indaba covering very different angles.
By Leon Louw founder of WhyAfrica and editor of the WhyAfrica magazine.
Down and out? I don’t think so….
Against the ropes? … No way!
Cobalt (on the left) and Lithium, two brothers in arms, are only resting after scouring the African plains for possible feeding opportunities.
Not too long ago, Cobalt and Lithium were emaciated shadows of the potbellied beasts they are now. Both were evicted from their respective natal territories. Their initial meeting was a violent affair with Lithium losing a chunk of his ear and Cobalt had a deep gash on his left ribcage.
A feared partnership
But gradually they warmed up to each other, and after a few days of pretend protesting, they teamed up to become the most feared partnership in this neck of the Lowland Forest.
Two days before we caught them napping in the wet grass, they devoured a fully grown zebra. Cobalt ate more than 25 kilograms, Lithium about 30kg, which explains their lethargy.
The Grand Critical Coalition
When we shot the video, 4 younger males were lazing around not more than 500m from Lithium and Cobalt. I named them Copper, Graphite, Manganese and Rare Earths.
They’ve been lingering on the outskirts of Cobalt and Lithium’s home range and a few days later they teamed up with the older lions to form what I called a Grand Critical Coalition.
Since then, the Critical Coalition has expanded its home range into the moist savanna. Their tails are up. Like Cobalt and Lithium, Copper, Graphite, Manganese and Rare Earths all have a unique story to tell.
Unique stories to tell
In fact, each one of WhyAfrica’s many followers that work or operate in Africa have a unique story to tell.

WhyAfrica will be scouring the Cape Town landscape for opportunities and unique stories during the annual Mining Indaba from the 3rd to 6th of February.
