WhyAfrica reporting from the Mouth of Truth in Rome, Italy
where we will be connecting the dots between Europe and Africa.
By Leon Louw founder of WhyAfrica and Endorphin Expeditions and editor of the WhyAfrica magazine.
Earlier this year I took a photo of the iconic Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) in Rome, Italy, only to realise later that my camera was set to black and white.
At first, I was disappointed. But then it struck me. Perhaps it’s fitting. In today’s world, news often feels stark, divided, and, like the photo, black and white. And truth? It’s rarely absolute. Often it lies in the eye of the beholder.
Towards the end of this year, I will be reporting for WhyAfrica from Rome in Italy and the rest of Europe, and that image of Bocca della Verità, has become a bit of a symbol, even if it was accidental. Or maybe exactly because it didn’t happen as planned.
As WhyAfrica continues tracing the critical minerals trail that links Europe and Africa, we see our role as seeking out the grey areas, asking the difficult questions, and connecting the dots between continents.

WhyAfrica on the ground tracing the critical mineral link
We’ll be on the ground in Europe as we are in Africa during our now well-known WhyAfrica Road trips, uncovering the real stories behind the supply chains, the people, and the policies shaping our industries.
The WhyAfrica magazine will be with us wherever we go, so if you feature in our exclusive WhyAfrica magazine, you’ll be seen on the global stage.
At the same time our WhyAfrica bi-weekly newsletter will feature some of the insights we’ll uncover in far-away lands.
The WhyAfrica newsletter continues to grow and today we are sending off the 117th edition to our loyal subscribers, marking another milestone in our effort to keep the WhyAfrica community and members informed and engaged.
Remember, you can subscribe to our magazines and newsletters by clicking on this link (https://www.whyafrica.co.za/subscribe/) or visiting the WhyAfrica website, your one-stop shop for on the ground information and business intelligence about Africa.

You’ll also be able to get regular updates and live reports during our WhyAfrica Overland Road Trips through Africa as well as live videos and footage from Europe on the WhyAfrica WhatsApp channel.
From a black-and-white photo of an ancient Roman artefact to the complex, multi-layered reality of modern geopolitics and resource dynamics, WhyAfrica is committed to telling the full story.
The truth might not always be black and white, but we’ll be there to explore every shade in between.
