WhyAfrica magazine read far and wide

The WhyAfrica magazine is read across Africa because we deliver our printed magazines by hand.

By Leon Louw founder of WhyAfrica and editor of the WhyAfrica magazine.

During our 2024 WhyAfrica overland Road Trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, we handed over one of our awesome goody bags (supplied by gold sponsor Bova) to Lorna and Dawie Joubert, farmers in the Mutare district on the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Lorna and Dawie are renowned cattle farmers and Brahman breeders in the Manicaland Province of Zimbabwe. Their families have been farming in this part of the world for almost a century.

A brief look at history

We met them at the Mutare Club building (at the junction of Herbert Chitepo Street [formerly Main Street] and Fifth Avenue), one of Mutare’s architectural gems, designed by James Cope-Christie originally as the Mutare Stock Exchange in the late 1890s.

The building represents a sign of the exuberant spirits of the time when 160 gold mines were in the early stages of development in the Penhalonga/Mutare area.

The Mutare club still has more than 80 members that include mining companies, agri-business, forestry and businessmen and women from the region. We met some of them in the pub when we slept over in the club house.

In the past mining contributed significantly to the economy in the Mutare region, located on the edge of the spectacular Eastern Highlands.

The Mutare Gold Belt delivered substantial amounts of gold in its heyday. However, apart from the Redwing Gold Mine and some small-scale operations and illegal activities, mining has dwindled in recent years as it has in the rich diamond fields of Marange, close to the town of Mutare.

Dawie and Lorna are now loyal WhyAfrica subscribers/members and receive their newsletter in their inboxes regularly every second Thursday. They are also well-known members of the Mutare Club.

In picture is Dawie and Lorna with the fantastic goody bag sponsored by our awesome gold sponsors the BBF Safety Group and Bova. All the farm workers on their farm, including Dawie and Lorna, wear Bova boots.

In the goody bag is WhyAfrica’s printed magazine with marketing material from our other sponsors and members. Our premier sponsor during the 2024 WhyAfrica Road Trip was Remote Exploration Services (RES) and our silver sponsors was NSDV.

Our night in Mutare was one of the highlights of our 2024 trip. We have already started planning the 2025 WhyAfrica Road Trip, so let us know if you would like to be a part of the 2025 WhyAfrica Road Trip story, one of the most unique events on the continent.
