Why Africa goes global
Data shows an increased global readership and increased interest of investing in Africa.
By Leon Louw founder of WhyAfrica and editor of the WhyAfrica magazine
I analysed the WhyAfrica website demographics this morning to determine which countries in Africa and globally follow the annual WhyAfrica Road Trip and actively use the WhyAfrica website.
In the back of my mind, I thought this data will give me a good idea of how many African countries have access to the internet and who follows WhyAfrica on our website (not on social media). At the same time, I could determine which readers around the world are interested in investing in Africa and/or doing business/expanding into Africa
Increased African readership
The results are astonishing. There are active WhyAfrica users in 48 African countries (out of 54 countries in Africa) that not only follow the annual WhyAfrica Road Trip, but that actively makes use of the WhyAfrica website every day. There has also been a significant increase in applications for WhyAfrica membership from a range of users in African countries.
The biggest surprise though is that users in 177 countries accessed the WhyAfrica website at some stage during 2024 and people in just more than 120 countries followed the 45-day WhyAfrica Road Trip event during which we travelled through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya.
According to Google Analytics the top 10 African countries in terms of active users of the WhyAfrica website are:
- South Africa
- Namibia
- Zambia
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Botswana
- Nigeria
- Zimbabwe
- Ghana
- Mozambique
International trends and data
The most noteworthy trend is a substantial increase in users/readers and investor interest from BRICS countries and the Middle East, although western countries still dominate WhyAfrica top followers with America and Norway (surprising?) topping the charts.
The top users of WhyAfrica website in international countries are:
- South Africa
- Norway
- USA
- UK
- Australia
- India
- Germany
- Netherlands
- Canada
- Namibia
Surge in readers and advertisers
Over the last few months there has been a surge in readers and advertisers from the following countries: India, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti (Turkey), China, Brazil, Russia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran and Saudi-Arabia.
Countries that showed a noteworthy spike on WhyAfrica’s user list over the last year are Norway, Finland, Ireland, Sweden, Spain, Austria, Philippines and Switzerland.
