Top hiking and mountaineering expeditions in Africa
Africa is home to famous peaks and exceptional hiking destinations for adventurers.
Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 metres. It attracts climbers from across the world who attempt to summit via routes like Marangu, Machame or Lemosho. The trek is non-technical but demanding due to altitude. Reaching Uhuru Peak is considered one of the great mountaineering achievements.
Mount Kenya in Kenya
Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest peak and a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its highest summits, Batian and Nelion, require technical climbing, while Point Lenana at 4,985 metres offers a trekking option. The mountain provides a challenging experience and is less crowded than Kilimanjaro.
Drakensberg in South Africa
The Drakensberg mountains stretch across KwaZulu-Natal and are popular for multi-day hikes and rock climbing. Highlights include the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls. The escarpment provides varied trails suitable for different levels of experience and is a key mountaineering region in southern Africa.
Magaliesberg in South Africa
The Magaliesberg is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. It is located close to Johannesburg and Pretoria and is popular for hiking, climbing and abseiling. The area has a network of trails suitable for day hikes and shorter expeditions.
