Exploration of the Kalahari Copper Belt in Botswana is ramping up. ASX listed Noronex is the latest company to be granted prospecting licenses in the northeast of Botswana. Noronex also holds a prospecting license for the Damara Project in Namibia.
According to Noronex’s Chief Geologist Bruce Hooper the two new Noronex licenses are located immediately adjacent to Cobre Resources’ project in Botswana.
The search for next major copper discovery
Cobre and BHP recently announced a partnership to explore the basin margins of the Kalahari Copper Belt.
“We applied for these two exploration licences in January. With the potential of the Kalahari Copper Belt strongly endorsed recently by the BHP earn-in deal with Cobre, we intend to continue our search on the basin margin for the next major copper discovery in the district – as with our recent drilling at the Damara Project in Namibia,” says Hooper.
Ground-based exploration work
“We plan to start ground-based exploration work after we get environmental approval for orientation geochemical sampling. We are also looking forward to the re-commencement of drilling at the Fiesta Project, where we are optimistic about what the next phase of deeper diamond drilling can deliver,” Hooper adds.
“The northern margin of the Kalahari Copper Belt in Namibia and Botswana is covered by shallow Kalahari sands and has never been drill tested.
Modelling shows significant similarities with the basement-hosted deposits in the Central African Copper Belt in Zambia and Congo.”
WhyAfrica’s visit to Botswana in 2022
WhyAfrica visited the Botswana Copper Belt during the 2022 WhyAfrica Road Trip and got a first hand look at several early-stage exploration projects in the Kalahari.
In picture we’re driving on a very remote sandy road from the exploration site back to base camp close to Ghanzi. The next day we visited the Khoemacau copper mine before heading back to Maun.
