Ivanhoe’s Liberty Corridor a step closer to reality

Ivanhoe is a step closer to realising its Liberty Corridor vision in West Africa.

By Leon Louw founder of WhyAfrica and editor of the WhyAfrica magazine.

The Unites States owned mining company Ivanhoe Atlantic is a step closer to realising its vision of shipping high-grade iron ore from West Africa to its ports on the east coast of America.

Ivanhoe Atlantic and Liberia’s Inter-Ministerial Concessions Committee (IMCC) have been meeting monthly since May 2024 to negotiate a deal and finalise plans to develop the Liberty Corridor and link Ivanhoe’s massive Kon Kweni iron ore mining project in Guinea with the Buchanan Port in Liberia.

The Liberty Corridor is an ambitious infrastructure initiative based on the model of the U.S-backed Lobito Corridor that links Angola, the DRC, and Zambia.

Kon Kweni is a high-grade iron ore deposit in southeastern Guinea (Monts Nimba) that contains about 752Mt of Direct-Ship Ore with close to 209Mt at 67.8% Fe.

Cross-border mining and logistics

Last week Ivanhoe Atlantic announced the first step in advancing the company’s cross-border mining and logistics project during a high-level meeting with US. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

The company will begin shipping iron ore from Kon Kweni to the US. towards the end of the year via Liberia’s Yekepa-Buchanan rail and port corridor. This follows the recent signing of a landmark Concession and Access Agreement with the Government of Liberia.

Company executives, including Chairman Robert Friedland, met with Deputy Secretary Landau last week to discuss the significance of the agreement and the strategic opportunity it represents for both U.S.-Africa commercial engagement and the global supply chain for critical minerals.

The meeting took place just one day after President Joseph Boakai’s bilateral session with U.S. President Donald Trump at a private summit in Washington.

Benefits for the US to ship iron ore from Liberia

There are enormous benefits for the US in shipping Ivanhoe Atlantic’s iron ore from Guinea through the port of Buchanan in Liberia. For example, it will take a shipment of iron ore only 15 days to reach the Port of Baltimore in Maryland.

Currently the USA imports iron ore from Australia and Brazil, which can take anything between 25 to 35 days either via Panama or around the Cape. Liberia is geographically closer to the US than Brazil and Australia. This reduces shipping costs significantly.

The Atlantic Corridor, promoted by Ivanhoe Atlantic, is a multi-modal infrastructure corridor (road, rail and port) being developed as a shared-use transportation system not just for Kon Kweni, but also for other future users including mining and other industries.

WhyAfrica plans to West Africa next year during the 2026 WhyAfrica Road Trip and who knows, we might be following the Liberty railway from pit to port.
