If you like spectacular sunsets, why not travel to Malawi?
If you like sunsets, Cape Maclear on the shores of the Lake Malawi, is a top spot
Close to Cape Maclear is Lake Malawi National Park which was gazetted in 1980. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional freshwater biodiversity and scenic landscape. The park is recognised as the world’s first freshwater national park.
It protects part of the Nankumba Peninsula, islands including Domwe, Mumbo and Thumbi, and surrounding lake waters. Its greatest conservation significance, however, lies beneath the surface. Lake Malawi is home to an extraordinary diversity of brightly coloured cichlid fish, many of which are endemic to the lake. The clear waters and rocky habitats support an exceptional freshwater ecosystem.
The terrestrial component also supports wildlife such as baboons, antelope, hyrax and numerous bird species, including African fish eagles, Cormorants and Hamerkops.
Around Cape Maclear, trails climb the surrounding hills to elevated viewpoints overlooking the lake, islands and peninsula. These steep climbs provide spectacular panoramic views.
The warm heart of Africa
Malawi may be small, but few African countries pack so much diversity into such a compact space. Known as the “Warm Heart of Africa”, it is a destination where spectacular landscapes, welcoming people and genuine adventure come together.
At the centre of the country is Lake Malawi, a vast freshwater lake that stretches for hundreds of kilometres and feels more like an inland ocean. Its clear waters, sandy beaches and colourful cichlid fish make it ideal for swimming, kayaking, diving and simply escaping the crowds.
Exceptional hiking and climbing
The dramatic peaks and forests of the Mulanje Massif offer outstanding hiking, while the Nyika Plateau provides a completely different landscape of rolling grasslands and abundant wildlife.
Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve offer excellent opportunities to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions and other African wildlife.
Then there is Cape Maclear, where mountains meet the lake and travellers can experience one of Malawi’s most beautiful settings. Add historic villages, vibrant markets, tea estates and a culture renowned for its hospitality, and Malawi becomes much more than a stopover.
For travellers looking for authentic Africa, spectacular scenery and fewer crowds, Malawi deserves a place near the top of the list. It is adventurous, accessible and remarkably rewarding.
