WhyAfrica has just released our July/August members report titled Europe and Africa: The critical minerals imperative which is available for non-members to purchase in WhyAfrica’s online shop:  https://www.whyafrica.co.za/shop/.

Africa’s place in the global geopolitical arena has never been more significant than it is today. As the world accelerates its transition to cleaner energy and greater strategic autonomy, the continent’s abundant reserves of critical minerals, especially cobalt, lithium and Rare Earth Elements (REE) have emerged as indispensable resources.

These materials are not only vital for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and battery storage, but also for modern defense technologies, digital infrastructure, and future industrial competitiveness.

Book now to be part of the 2025 WhyAfrica Road Trip through Africa.

WhyAfrica in Europe

Against this backdrop, WhyAfrica will spend a fair amount of time at the end of this year (after Leg 1 of the 2025 WhyAfrica Road Trip through Africa) in Rome, Italy, a city that has become a diplomatic crossroads for Africa-Europe relations, to track the evolution of Europe’s engagement with Africa.

With renewed urgency, the European Union (EU) and key member states such as France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom (UK) are repositioning themselves in Africa’s mining and energy sectors.

Understanding which EU investors are active, where they are investing, and how these partnerships are being structured is vital for members seeking to anticipate trends, forge strategic alliances, or enter new markets.

The EU-Africa nexus

Over the past four months, WhyAfrica has focused on the growing EU-Africa nexus, particularly around mining and exploration, infrastructure, green energy, and securing of critical raw materials.

This report is a compilation of our most important published articles to date. It serves as a teaser for the deeper intelligence and on-the-ground insights we plan to share in the coming months as we engage directly with key decision-makers, government representatives, and corporate leaders across Europe.

We hope you find this report both insightful and actionable. WhyAfrica is committed to bringing you the sharpest analysis and most relevant business intelligence from this fast-evolving arena. As we continue our work from Africa, Europe and beyond, we will keep our network fully informed on the developments that matter most.
