Elevate Uranium’s Koppies in Namibia is WhyAfrica’s Pick Of The Week

Drilling results from Australian listed Elevate Uranium’s Koppies Uranium Project in the Erongo Region of Namibia has confirmed the potential for resource growth within the existing resource shell.     

Elevate has received downhole gamma probe data for an additional 340 holes drilled around Koppies 1 and 2 and at Koppies 3 since the last ASX announcement in January 2023.

The latest drilling north of Koppies 2 confirms a continuous connection between Koppies 2 and 3 across a broad area.

In addition, large areas of continuous mineralisation have been confirmed south of Koppies 2, through to the southern boundary of the Koppies tenement, connecting with Koppies 4.

According to Elevate Uranium’s Managing Director, Murray Hill, mineralisation intersected in holes to the southeast and east of Koppies 2 indicates potential for extensions.

“Some previously drilled holes within the resource shells at Koppies 1 and 2 were twinned and drilled deeper than the original resource holes. The twinned holes intersected mineralisation beneath the base of the original holes, indicating that there is potential for additional mineralisation from future, deeper drill programs (holes up to about 25 metres deep). This indicates that additional deeper, twin drilling of a significant number of the original resource holes will be required,” Hill explains.

“The latest drill results confirm the connection between Koppies 1, 2, 3 and 4, and also confirm our proposition that there are additional areas likely to contain mineralisation, within the resource shell boundaries, and they also indicate the potential for the resource at Koppies 2 to grow to the east.

“With most of the Koppies tenement now indicating broadly spaced mineralisation, we have numerous areas for additional drilling programs. Currently, we have decided to focus our attention on Koppies 3, with one drill rig moving north from Koppies 2 drilling at a spacing of 200 metres by 200 metres to confirm the outline of the mineralised envelope. A second drill rig will follow drilling in a 100 metre by 100 metre hole pattern, to enable estimation of a JORC resource,” says Hill.

Koppies was the first of Elevate Uranium’s tenements in the Namib Desert to be explored.

Uranium mineralisation identified within the palaeochannels is calcrete hosted, the same style of ore used to develop Elevate’s U-pgrade uranium beneficiation process.

U-pgrade is Elevate’s wholly owned patented beneficiation process that was developed on ore from the Marenica Uranium Project also located in the Erongo Region of Namibia.  It is a powerful enabler that has allowed Elevate to capitalise on exploration opportunities as a result of the potential for a much lower project processing cost base.

U-pgrade is a beneficiation process that rejects greater than 95% of the mass of uranium ore by utilising commonly used and well understood beneficiation unit processes, which enables the removal of the non-uranium bearing minerals.

Calcrete hosted uranium ores are characterised by clay and carbonates, with the ore nearest the surface, generally representing about 15% of the resource, containing sulphate minerals. The carbonates consume vast quantities of acid resulting in a high operating cost, which effectively eliminates acid leaching as a process route for these ore types. The alternate leach process is an alkali leach, however, the sulphates consume vast quantities of the alkali reagent meaning that this process route is uneconomic for high sulphate ore, which results in the high sulphate ore, generally 15% of the Namibian resources, being excluded from the process plant feed. Either process route results in high operating costs or exclusion of the near surface ore.

The U-pgrade process removes these clay and carbonate minerals producing a concentrate that is suitable for acid leaching, which is, the lower temperature and lower cost leach process. Leaching in acid means that the high sulphate ore can be processed, thereby improving project economics and bringing that ore into the mineable reserve and increasing the size or life of the project.
