Africa on the agenda at Clean Energy Roundtable in Rome

Renewable energy and securing supply chains were main talking points.

Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad said at the Clean Power for Growth Roundtable in Rome, Italy, on Wednesday that the company is making great progress in its decarbonisation pathway, including the further development of 3 to 5GW of wind and solar power in South Africa.

Top representatives from the energy industry, finance, international organisations and institutions attended the Roundtable chaired by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.

The Roundtable discussed the need for responsible global clean power leadership, unlocking clean growth and jobs, particularly for young people in Africa, and action to build resilient clean power supply chains.

In addition to Anglo American the event hosted other influential voices from companies such as Centrica , Octopus Energy , Barclays , Eni Plenitude Wind & Energy and Prysmian who discussed urgent challenges of climate change while unlocking economic opportunities.

“Supporting renewable energy investment not only moves us towards carbon neutrality but also delivers long-term socio-economic benefits for host countries and communities.

“I was therefore delighted to participate in this roundtable, making progress on private-public solutions to improve the enabling environment for further investment and progress. Such collaboration is essential for driving forward the energy transition,” said Wanblad.

According to Fatih Birol, Executive Director at International Energy Agency, who also attended the Roundtable, clean power solutions like renewables and nuclear represent 90% of new capacity that is installed across the world.

“As abundant and cheap energy is a key pre-requisite for growth and development, the deployment of those technologies can be an important opportunity for many countries, including emerging economies,” said Birol.
